Promotion is that of Master Boatbuilder at Sheerness. The
name of the man who occupies it at present is Mansfield.

August 2d 1770 I was put apprentice to Mr Gray then Master-
Shipwright at Woolwich for 7 years.

In 1773 I followed him to Chatham upon his being made Master
Shipwright at that place.

In 1775 Mr Gray died: whereupon I continued in the Yard at
Chatham as apprentice to his Executrix.

Although my time was out in Strictness on the 2d of August
last (1777) however on account of some uncertainties that arose from
the circumstances of the date of my Indentures the actual commencement
of my service and the manner of my being entered at Chatham,
I chose rather to continue till the 11th of January 1778. I could
not then continue any longer as an Apprentice. I was discharged of
course I as being out of my time. I did not then make any applicati
to be entered in the condition of a common man, because I must
then have been put upon some particular piece of work, & should
not have had it in my power to have improved myself in the
several branches of the Art.

Since that time although my name has not been upon the Books,
I have constantly attended the works carrying on in the Yard at
Chatham, & have continued to attend to those pursuits which I was
before engaged in.
