Castle. No boat ha was to be had in the Morning from the Formidable
and the afternoon was too bad weather. I slept on board the next morning
I went to the Sterling Castle but Mr Cha' was ashore he has a house
& family at Gosport. I called onboard the Victory to see Peake
but could not stay long on account of keeping the boat at a time when
Mr Hugh Palliser was going to muster the men. When I returned Captn
Barely introduced me to Mr Hugh for the purpose only of my taking
a letter on shore for him. He made many very polite apologies for
troubling me, & afterwards thankt me as politely when another opportunity
offered of sending it. There is no harm in being known to him even though
it be for the purpose of carrying a letter for him.

With respect to the Steering Apparatus this Iron hoop had been taken to be
altered but the Master Blacksmith was so ignorant he could not & or so obstinate
he would not follow the directions of the Carpenter. I have therefore undertaken
to ask the Commissioner to give orders to the Blacksmith to do
it make 2 new ones according to my directions, & I will stand by while he does it.
I went onboard the Bienfaisant to see Teers who married Gray's Neice.
I went also aboard the Freedroyant with a lieutenant of the Formidable
who was desired to introduce me to Capn Jarvis as a particular friend
of Capn Barely's. Captn Jarvis you are to know is one of the highest
rate Captains. He went all over the Ship with me and we became
quite great I mentioned by my alteration in the Steering apparatus and
seemed exceedingly pleased at offering to have his altered according
to my plan. He had been exceedingly intimate with Mr Gray although
I had not seen him there I had seen his portrait at the Commissioner's.
tomorrow I shall get these hoops done and go onboard to see them put on
as soon as the I can next day perhaps. This morning while good people
are at Church I shall call on Mr Chas' at his house. if the fleet
should sail before I see him he may get killed before I have searched
his brains. I want to talk to him about transporting vessels overland.
I shall for the first time make use of it did not come time
