Q.S.P. 17th May 1779.
My dear Saml
Agreable to yr request I shod have answer'd your last Letter sooner,
tho' I cou'd not do it decisively - but I was willing first to call on
Mr Randal, & have some Conversation with him, upon ye Subject
not with a view of making any thing of him with regard to him
self, but for the Sake of Information with regard to others of the
same Profession he was as friendly & communicative as I cod
expect. he told me there were but four Capital yards, his
own, Wells, Perrys, & another whose name I do not recollect,
but from the account he gave me how they were circumstanced
I cod form no Expectations from them, he said there were two
others, a Mr. Gray & one besides, ye former he said was a
worthy good Sort of man, & whom he shod recommend preferably
to the others - those two last he wod speak to, & let me know
the result; I told Randal fairly your Situation their constancy
and my own in point of Fortune, & that it was not of that

money to set you up, any other way, than by if it shod

suitable Settlement, upon such an occasion & such a one

Part, tho' he had great reason to believe you had a great
deal of the Scientific & Theory — you say, you can see
no Method of Trying Experiments here at home, but I
can't help thinking it possible, for you in Conjunction with
some young Persons old or young of diligence & sobriety to begin in business
at some place upon the River, such as Folkstone &c
and if you cod shew ability, in such a way, it wod
recommend you by degrees unto more & more —
My fears are, that you have got into such a habit or rambling, & shifting
your Quarters from one Place to another since you were out of your
time, at Chatham, that it will be a long time before you will be inclin'd to Settle tho' you mention
"your intention of being concern'd in business for your self one day or
