but in saying what he did, it serv'd his own turn, in Shifting the
occasion of leaving you at all in that respect. If he knew you had
what you had of your own in the Funds, there cod be no occasion for
my saying with you in giving him a Security — wch. is an Obligation
I shod never care to lay myself under to him.

And it wod be strange indeed if I shod in that way assist you
in procuring you money for a purpose I utterly disapprove of; I
plainly perceive if you are determin'd to go abroad against my
Inclination, it will be a means of your Exhausting what little
property you have of your own in the Funds, & that all you will
bring home in return, if ever you do return, & whether I shall
live to see you return'd is still more uncertain, will be nothing
more than gratifying your own Curiosity in having seen the
outlines of Russian Dock yards, & your Brother's Curiosity, in
the Accounts you will give him of the Reception you meet
with from those Persons to whom you may Carry Letters of
Recommendation; & what you can pick up of their respective
Characters &c. but I do not understand how such returns as
these, can ballance against the dissipation of your little
Property, against the Exposing your own Person to the hazards
of a voyage, & to the Inconveniences you must expect to

th during your Stay there: to these, my dea
I w d another Consideration, was I not sensible, it we
trifling a one, to expect it shod have any weight with you,
how ever heavy it will fall upon me, the anxiety of mind
that will continually affect me from an apprehension that I
may never see you more — It seems strange that you cannot
be happy & contented to live in your own Country, with the
Competency you have at present, to pursue your litterary or
mechanical pursuits, by means of wch., tho' you were not to go
into business, & into the Track of practical Profession, I shod think
you might be able to distinguish yourself, so, as to engage the
notice & esteem of those who might be able as well as willing
to provide for you, in some respectable way, to your Satisfaction:

thing more than I enjoy, but to see you settled in some
