the comfort that what depends upon my own industry has not been
wanting. I have been fortunate in procuring by one means
or other abundance of letters of recommendation, some of them from
people of the highest distinction in rank here to people of the
highest rank abroad. Of one sort or other I shall carry with
me at least 60 or 70, perhaps even more.
When Mr Mulford was in town about a month or 5 weeks ago,
understanding that I had occasion immediate occasion for some
ready money to purchase necessaries for my expedition, he
proposed to me that in order to postpone as long as possible the
selling out any money from the funds I should receive from him
the sum of £55 which he had to pay to you, in order to pay
it out to you on your coming to Town which was then expected
every day. I did so, and now wait your orders when and where
to remit it to you.
