to any other accidents as myself. I am the only Englishman
on board although all speak english in some more than others.
my only companion in the Cabbin except the crew of the Vessel
is a superannuated Hair dresser who is turned Hair merchant
and is going to the fair at Frankfurt to follow his business.
He is a much better fellow passenger than I could have any reason
to expect. I have not been sea sick but we have had such fine
weather that perhaps scarcely my mother would have been so.
I have a filthy stinking dutch man one of the crew for a bedfellow
which I am obliged to put up with as there is not room to li lie any
where else under cover though it were on bare boards. Our provisions
you may well imagine are neither dainty in themselves nor made
very inviting by the method of cooking. I nevertheless contrive to
eat quite enough and have been more in fear of absolute want than
any thing else. Your knife & fork is quite a treasure to me not
only from its conveniency for my own use, but as by lending it to my
ship mets I prevent the necessity of the meat being handled with
unwashed hands.

This Voyage serves as a good seasoning against
what I may hereafter meet with. I study Dutch Shipbuilding
and sailing and read German Grammar for my amusement. Now
& then I look at a dutch Grammar which I have with me but
as this language and the German have a great resemblance I
perhaps only impede my progress in the German. We have been out
of sight of land for these 2 days and more and now begin to be a little
impatient for the sight of our destined port. I have always heard
speak of Holland as being so very low that I don't expect to see it
till we are within 5 or 6 miles of it.
