I am writing now with a silver pen being one of the divers articles
which I stript my elder brother of. It makes one of the set of
instruments I have in the pocket Book which I have had of Blamire
as the present you were so kind as to offer me. I have put anmanyother
instruments anext to it which I haved before or bought myself since but yet I fear you
will find that I am not to be trusted again with the unbounded offer
of a pocket book with instruments. It is exceedingly large and contains
a great variety of usefull vade mecums.

Tuesday Morning

at about 7 o'Clock this morning we came to anchor about 5 or 6 miles
short of Hellvoetsluys. here we lost our tide and as the wind is against
us we cannot procede till the turn of the tide which will be about
1 or 2 o'Clock. We have however the satisfaction of seeing an
destined port, and the still greater satisfaction of having Escap'd
the french Privateers which should they any
they might perhaps have stript us of everything
should take a fancy to. What I was most affraid of was my letters
of recommendation. Had I not heard so much of it I should
have been surprized at the not being able to see any part of
the country but just the banks of the sea or rather river.
I should no more expect to find an opulent country beyond these
banks than on the Goodwin sands.

Tuesday afternoon 11 o Clock

I got ashore here about ½ past 3. and was so exceedingly lucky
as to meet my 2 dutch friends Messrs Braham & Decourt just landed
from the Packet. I have just stept into the Dock yard here but
they stopt me a few steps within the gates. I am just going with
