He also procured me the services of a great Ship
owner there, that I might see a remarkable Ship.
Wilkinson his partner I told have told you
in my other sheet loaded me with more letters.
He was amazingly freindly would have had me
dine with with out the least ceremony in the valdment
every day. It was by eating his victuals and
drinking his wine that I procured his good offices.
He offered me money at libitum and upon
my having a little difficulty in meeting with
Haselyren on account of the length of time I spent
in my last visit to the May's before the day I
came away, he told me if I did not happen to
meet with him that he beggd I might not be
detained a day for money for that if I sent a
servant with a note I should he would send me
what I pleased. As his house does most business
business in Russia if I want any thing sent
by from Holland it is to be left to his charge
he has frequent opportunities of forwarding any
thing. He is a Bacheldor, but has a good house.
Through one channel or other I believe there is
scarcely any information relating to Holland which
is atable at all but what I have the means
of acquiring. So far so good. Dont think
however but what I will consider the difference there
must be between the professions made to a person's
face and the disposition to take pains to serve
that person when he is at a distance.
As to Wernier I cant say much of him except
that he is husband to Madame Wernier.
I supped there once and could not find time to
call afterwards except just to take leave when they
were not at home.
Mr Melvil was very friendly also his wife a very amiable
woman, they have some five children who at the age
of perhaps from 10 to 14 speak English, french &
dutch all alike. I supped once & dined once
and refused several other invitations. He had it not
in his power to procure me any information but what
I could get easier from other quarters.
Of the house of Crop & May, Crop is dead and
has been for many years I believe. May does
the whole business lives in but a small house
where he receives scarcely any company: He must
however be very rich his house is thought as firm
if not the firmest in Amsterdam for he never gives
the least credit to any.
Fryday morning.
What a number of things I have in my hands!
Papers in heaps about me which want not only putting
in order but additions explanations &c. Many letters
I ought to write to day, and a great deal I would wish
to write to you. Besides these things I have to think
of by what means I am to continue my journey and that
as soon as possible certain commissions of yours too
I have to execute. 1st I will determine to eat at nobody's
house but Mr Hanbury's where I may be consulting
and enquiring at the same time.
Thelasson's letter I shall not deliver. I had a great
mind not to have delivered the one I had from him to
Amsterdam. I had determined not to accept any invitations
which it might procure me, however I wasnt
put to the option all I could was very cool offers of
service, They enquired where I lodged but I heard no more.
No letter from my father this I wonder much at, surely
he knows where to write to me. I hope he is not displeased at
my not directing my letters immediately to him. When I
know he is in Town I can direct them to him and he can read
them to you. I hope he wont expect me to write seperate
letters for him & you. If he knew how much I have
upon my hands & head I am sure he would not wish
it. I found here 1. Your 2 letters from you the
The last date of the oldest was Septr 4th. that of the latest
was dated Septr 28th. 2ly. an exceedingly friendly
letter from Lindegren dated the 15th of Septr. inclosing an
account which I am excedingly obliged to him for, do
tell him so in case when you have any opportunity in
case of my not being able to write to him by this post.
3dy a packet from Grill containing a letter very
obliging letter which enclosed one to his Cousin at
Stockholm. also a cover directed by you enclosing
a ruled sheet on which was the introductory note to
Petty's plan and an Foreword to introduction to "Properties".
also a new Practice Table.
I could just now employ 2 or 3 Secretaries of which your
worship should be the first.
I am just now come from Mr Hanbury's where
I have dined. They had been long expecting me
of course. I must sup there tonight and dine with
them at their house out of Town tomorrow. I may
go from Lubec to Dantzic by sea and most likely in
less time and than by land, I cannot till tomorrow
learn when the vessels go: but I hope there will be one
within 4 or 5 days. I shall prefer this way of going on
