Hamburgh Octr 12th 1779.

Mr Hanbury is very much affraid that you should think him wanting in
respect to you on account of his not having answeringd your letter to him, but he thought
there was no occasion to put you to the expence of the postage for saying what I could
say for him. I went on Saturday to dinner at Mr Hanbury's country house
ab about 2 miles out of the City. Chas Hanbury and I walked together. So pressing
were they in their invitations and so friendly in this behaviour that I could not
get away till Yesterday Monday Afternoon; and today I have dined with them
again. Tomorrow I believe I must do the same and in short eat always with them
and Chas Hanbury attend always on me while I stay. I dont know when I have
been so perfectly stupid and absent as I have been since I have been here
till yesterday. Not a sentence could I speak that was scarcely sense
nor had I for above one hour in a four and twenty any idea but such as were
forced into me by the objects that presented themselves. Therefore I am sure that the
civilities I have had paid me must have been entirely from my friend's recommendation
and therefore could not at all flatter my Vanity. I do however comfort myself with
the thoughts of the probability of the indisposition of my thinking faculties being in
great measure owing to those of my the disorder of my Stomach. and though
the time I spent in the country in Shooting at m a mark and in
attempting to shoot at birds partridges was so far lost as that I did not
get one single article of useful information Yet by some means or other I
seem to have entirely got rid of my indigestion, and my stomach
now performs its functions as well as it has done since I left England.
In the trial of skill by the firing of Pistols and rifled guns at m a mark
I was the second best with the rifled Guns and the best with Pistols, therefore
let those take care who provoke me to fight with such weapons.

In the midst of my state of stupidity I had for the space of an hour
all my senses about me in their fullest vigour this wonderfull change was brought
about by Chas Hanbury playing upon the Harpsichord and singing a few airs
