Memel 1st December 1779.

The badness of the roads, and the time it takes to make acquaintances
with people sufficiently to establish a correspondence with them, and 150
other things which you will hear of in a post or two have not
only prevented my getting farther on in my journey, but have also
not left me even time to write to you, and yet I have written severall
sheets of Inserenda and letters to other people.

I am now at Mr Simpson's (not the Simpson to whom I had
a letter from Henniker) writing in his country house. He told
me the post was going out in an hour and I was determined
not to let it go without just telling you that I exist and that
I have all the reason to be much pleased with what I have done
during my journey on every account but that of the expence which
has so much exceded what I had expected that it makes me
frequently very uneasy. I have been absolutely obliged to buy
a kind of vehicle between a chaise with a leather cover like
our one horse chaises, and a Waggon. with this & 3 horses
I have travelled from all the way from Hamburgh. and this
with some other little accidents has made an enormous expence.
Not having heard from you or from anybody else in England since
your letter which I found at my arrival at Hamburgh, you may
imagine I was very anxious to meet ywhat ever letters might be sent forward
