Petersburg. Easter day O.S. and half the nation
drunk through devotion.

I have am just this instant set my returned from dinner,
to see if there were any messages or letters for me.
I find one card, and 2 letters, the card is from
the Countess & Count Ostermann the Chancellor to invite
me to supper the day after tomorrow, where I shall be forced
to eat a great deal at a time I would wish to eat nothing.

The othe two letters are from your honour, the first
I have received and will I no doubt furnish me a
delicious feast though I have but just dined.

I have only opened them and taken up the pen that
I may give you a few of the ideas which arise as
I go on in reading them. It is the only chance you
have for my answering them as I am at present
circumstanced. I also take a scrap of paper to
put down heads of enquiry for giving you news, which
I hope I shall contrive to write upon.

Cou.

You have been very good to give me so much matter
for letter: It is a matter I still think of at odd times
but as I have other matters at present more interesting
I don't feel such a degree of satisfaction from it as I otherwise
should do. it is a matter au pis aller, or which perhaps
may in yield something in conjunction with other matters

Letters from S.B.

I am exceedingly happy to think that my letters have given
so much pleasure to my Father, Uncle, Cousin & c
If I had more of the faculty of writing upon such subjects
and had not so much of that timidity which has
made me conceal a great deal, I flatter myself
their pleasure would have been greater. At the
same time that I may ha be too timid with respect
to what I trust to the post g I could wish you
were much more so. Depend upon it letters are opened
and depend upon it also that any thing about Cour
may hurt me.

The going to Moscow which you
seem not at all satisfied with I shall say nothing
more about except that it has answered my expectations
and in general which are it is not worth while I may should explaining
to you. and besides that my connection with
Pleschijeff which was the unforeseen consequence of it,
is an inestimable treasure. As I am sure you will

now no longer be dissatisfied with me on that account the
feelings which I had from the part of your letter which
touched on that subject will presently pass away.

List of Navy.

I shall certainly be much obliged to Wilson for this,
supposing it to be of this year with the stations and
Commanders of each Ship. I have just now lying
before me a perfect list of that kind of the latter and
of last summer belonging of Sr James Harris's.

I have no notion of your taking it into your head
to give me lessons about caution & prudence and the
like. Where the devil have you been and what have
you done to learn these things yourself? This world
has come to a fine pass — when such as you give themselves
such airs.

You will before all from

so glad that it is such fair way of being for out that
I cannot scarcely regret either its not having the probable
advantages from such review,
much the impediment which the

Lohmenn's friend Kichelbather is just returned to
Petersburg he has been with me this afternoon.
You cannot conceive how anxious Lohmenn's friends
and relations are here for his welfare and to see him.

Model

By no means in the world let the Model slip
through your fingers. I dont know that I shall
have an opportunity of proposing it before this
post goes out but lose no time to secure the
possession of it.

Letters to SB.

Your letters came by the Courier and therefore
free of any expence. I have in my last letter
directed you to direct everything for me in future
to Sr James Harris. Suppose it however always
possible that he may open my letters if nobody
else does. to be sure this is not very probable but it is
possible.

What a you were to give yourself so much trouble
in writing & me in reading about Coppersheathing & Guns
What was there secret in that? It has cost me a monsterous
deal of time, to say nothing of the anxiety least I should not make
it all out.
