Full of disappointment, I hasted our departure from
Moscow, — a few day's travelling brought us here
and I was happy beyond expectation to see Sam
forget those charms which could prognosticate
nothing but pain, we thought and conversed of
things more solid, useful and interesting —
no sooner arrived here, than a slight indisposition
confin'd him to his room for a fortnight, after
which he was presented to the Empress, who saw
him with an attentif Eye, gave him her hand,
and smiled when he kiss'd it. Sir James Harris
who shews him more than common civilities,
has since that time introduced him into the
best societys at Petersbourg, where he began
to feel himself quite domicilé, till the Empress's
Journey to Maguiloff gave him a handle of
snatching himself away from amidst his home,
a favourable occasion, as he termed it, offer'd
itself for him to see the interior settlements
of Russia: An English merchant, one Mr Eaton,
a man of very active genius, purposing to profit
by the trade, commencing between Russia and the
Levant, by the way of the Black Sea , (he having a
house at Constantinople), was setting out for Cherson,
a new settlement of ours not far from Ozakoff,
where we are making fortifications and introducing
