Chernobyl July 23d N.S. 1780
To let thee know that I am still in the land of the living after having
passed the desert country about the black sea, and that the Zaporoga Cosack
of which you have certainly read and whose depredations you
perhaps feared. The last letter I wrote to you was from Pultava
I was then going to quit my travelling companion Eaton and set off
for Za the new Town of Therson with an intention of going from
there to the Tagonrog. I however returned from Therson to Pultava
taking the waterfalls of the Dnieper in my way, and gave up the idea
of going to Tagonrog. I am now in my return to Petersbourg,
but I make a little detour to spend a few days here with the Lord
of the place. I dont believe I told you of my having made acquaintance
at Moscow and called with a Count Chadkiawitch one of the
few principal Nobles of Poland. It was my fate to meet this man
wherever I went at Petersbourg as well as Moscow. at Cranstadt even we
spent a day together, where he was a terrible boar to me. I was affraid
even that I could not help letting him perceive that he thought so Instead
however of those impression dispositions towards me which I imagined I had given
him, at the time of his setting off to return home he gave me the strongest
invitation imaginable to come to see him offering me a number of
conveniences for my travelling as inducements. I at that time had very
