Dear Bentham

I give you joy of the
recovery of your & condole with
you on the defeat of your friend
Clarke — Here is the passage I mentioned
out of Wieland's Diogenes.

Every public or private virtue has for its object
to promote some good, or to prevent, or change to
good some evil. & if you anlyze this Evil & Good
the first will always resolve itself into pain; & the
other onto pleasure.

You will find by my letters to Wilson that
I have been so out of humour or so ,
that I have not been able to read your
Compensation — I shall be in town the first
Week of October, but if you should want
the M.SS. before, my Laundress has directions
to deliver it to any body you send for it.

Yours truly S. Douglas
