St Petersbourg Novr 28th 1780 OS

I received today yours of the 14th. Our correspondence just now seems to go
on tollerably well, this however will not long be the case as I believe I shall shortly
set off upon another journey to the distant parts of this country.

Dec:r 10thI have put off writing to you Post after post in hopes of being able
to give you some interesting news with respect to myself : but I am now no
better able to do it than I was 2 months ago. Can you be satisfied & happy
at knowing that in general I am in a very promising train, and that though
it is not yet determined whether my beginning will be in this country, yet
many circumstances recur to favour the prospect I have of distinguishing myself one
day or other in my own. What I expect however to afford you the greatest
immediate satisfaction is the assurance I can give you that the allowance
my father is so kind as to make me will (with the very great oeconomy
which I have habituated myself to ) furnish me with subsistence in the mean time.

Decr 20th I am mad with myself now for having delayed writing to you so long as
I promised in my last than you should hear from me again in a day or two.
Yours of the 29th of Novr is just now come to hand. I only now write that you may not
think the bears have eaten me. I may perhaps set off very soon for Arcangel
I may perhaps go to Czernobyl. I may perhaps be prevented from doing either
by a money getting invention of mine which occupies me just now.
Continue to do as you have done these last 2 or 3 letters, write to me about
yourself and give me all the information you get about the Marine or any new
inventions and suppose that I am following the most advantageous pursuits.
I am sure you would approve of what I do if you know all my circumstances,
but I cannot enter into the necessary disenssions and your advice can not be
at present of any use. My friend is so taken up that though he regrets
