Whoever informed you, that you might go by Water from
Jobolsk to Barnaul, has informed you very wrong.
You would have a most tedious passage, all against
the stream upon the river Oby. Besides the passage Country
thro' the Baraba is so gay & remarkable, that you should
not neglect it. Much less exchange it for a dull
journey along a river bordered by Bogs & forests.
In my Letter to Cassan I mentioned, that, if
at Catherineburg, with the advice of Mr. Gruber,
you could make a purchase for me of a few
rich specimens of native Gold, red Lead ore &
Malachite, fo to the amount of about fifty
Rubels, I should return you that money
with many thanks, provided Mr. Gruber should
sincerely think them elegant specimens. I here
repeat to you this request. At Barnaul or
Schlangenberg also, if one considerable specimen, with
a Crust of native Gold of more than the
size & value of ten or 15 Rubels, or little
short of it, could be purchased, I would stake
it for any money. But you must take information
for that thro' your interpreter, among the
petty officers, without even shewing any interest.
