groves of every kind of wild fruit trees, &c even
the vine is growing wild there.
Kislar, from whence the road leads to Astracan is
such a unwholesome place, that it is not
adviseable to make any stay there.
Between Kislar & Astracan is a continual desert
intermixed with saltish marshes, amongst which
one remarkable, called Gorkaya rebshka, where
commonly many Horses dye if not taken
care of, from some unknown quality of the
herbs growing there, or some particular, but as yet
doubtful species of plant.
At Astracan a remarkable mixture of
Asiatic nations may be observed; besides
the Tartars, Persians, Armenians, & Calmuks
who encamp in the surrounding deserts,
there is a Company of about one hundred
Indians from Multan, who have a particular
f building, where they live & trade, & the worship
of which is worth being seen.
The fisheries of the Sturgeons of various sorts,
as well in the Volga, at Astrachan, as in the
very Caspian, is an important object. The preparation
of Isinsglass, which has so long been
thought a secret in England & described, till lately
