the Civilities which people press upon me. I must now cut as short
possible.

If you will write to me immediately and have anything
to say to me at Astrachan your letter may get time enough to Petersbourg
to be sent to me there: But for the 49th time I do beg of you to
direct your letters to Sir James Harris. Anything about the navy I
need scarcely tell you would be a treasure. Can you prevail on Wilks
to give a short account of the distribution of our Naval force at this
time. I am expected to know these things and they will be more particularly
enquired after by Navy people whom I may see by the Caspian or
black seas. Without his or some such able & compassionate person's
assistance I shall be by that time most profoundly ignorant in that
respect; I am much so at present through forgetfulness.

I think I have more than a few grains of assurance to ask any thing
in the writing way of my friends considering my consummate negligence
in that respect.

I received yours of Feby 23, the 26th of last month and I must confess
that the outside of it even gave a degree of pleasure I had not felt
before for a long time: the receiving of it at such an out of the way place
as this heightened it a good deal. the

I received yours seventh but am afraid the contents will

.

You will have a visit from some friends of mine from Archangel this
summer which you may dispose of as you think proper. A fine young
fellow of a white bear and 2 or 3 Reindeer which Gen Wazal made me
a present of. I would have you shew a great deal of respect to the surly gentleman
as those of his complexion don't often travel to foreign countries. A note
will be sent to 2. S.P. as soon as they arrive in the River Thames and you
should then acquaint their future owners of that they may send people to conduct
them straight to their quarters. My father I suppose will scarcely like to make
the bear stand centinel in his courtyard.

I have promised General Cashkin the Governor of these provinces to send for some
filtering paper such as you & I have used in Chemical experiments. It is for
clearing water on a journey when a stone for that purpose is not portable. do send some quire
of it to Sir James Harris's for him by the Ships.
