I am just now collecting some information about a Sect of people of which
there are a great number in this place. They are called Reskelnicks.
Abbe Chappe speaks of them but can knew little of their customs. They had
one custom of a singular kind to burn themselves and children to get
to heaven, and frequently their children without them. The burnt boxes
powdered were a great treasure and used to be put in water or whatever
else they drank to render it holy. They have no Priests and will never eat
or drink with any other Sect. They make the sign of the Cross with different
fingers. In other respects they agree with the Grecian religion and are
a quiet people resembling in some respects to our Quagers. They have
a great detulation for Tobacco.
