I consider myself under to Mr Denidoff, for the work which I shall have
done at his Fabric, had set me upon considering of some way in which I might
acknowledge it. Now, nothing could be better for that purpose than a machine for
doing, in future, such work as has caused most trouble in getting done for me. I
therefore wish to take this opportunity of putting this machine in practice; but as all
who have occasion for the work of such a machine cannot but find great advantages
from the extraordinary accuracy, as well as cheapness of the work capable of being
done by it, I see no reason why the inventor should not have his profit also. In
England, you know Sir, any one who has invented something new which is likely to
be of public utility can obtain, for the expence of sixty or seventy pounds, a patent
or exclusive privilege of making all of his invention for a certain number of years.
This term is generally confined to fourteen years. In France the King's patent to
the like effect is as easily obtained, & I believe in Holland there is something to
the same purpose. I know not if this be the case in Russia, & though I would
wish to give the preference to this country, yet I see no reason why I should
not receive the benefit from it here, which I could obtain in other countries.

I cannot think that Her Majesty, from the extraordinary encouragement she
gives in so many other ways for the introduction of improvements of all kinds,
would refuse such a means of encouragement as this.

What I wish then Sir, to beg of you, in case you do not disapprove of my
introducing such an improvement into this country, is that you would be so kind
as to ask whether I might have such a patent or privilege. Though I shall
do all I can in preparation, yet I think it will be most prudent to wait
your answer before I put it up.

In case of my being able to obtain such a patent it might be proper that
I should return as soon as possible to Petersburgh, as it is possible her Majesty
might wish to have such machines erected in different parts of her dominion where
She is making her improvements & where there are buildings of every kind going
forward. I might receive her order for that purpose with regard to the construction
of the machines, & at the same time gratify the great curiosity I have to be better
