Here in the town there are not so many of these insects but farther on the Governor
tells me I shall be obliged not only to make use of a veil put to dip it in pitch
the smell of which is said to be even mortal to them. I have a green gauze
veil which a young lady at Petersbourg gave me for my journey and which I
mean to avail myself of tomorrow I had not it with me at Nigno Taghil as
it was snowy weather when I went there.

We dined today in a room in the
Garden at the Governors and drank coffee out of doors under the shade of the trees
which though there was as much a good deal of wind was very desirable.

The Governor told me he would walk with me to the Fabrick here but beg'd to
be excused till the cool of the evening. I believe in England you have not an
idea of the heat being so troublesome in Serbia.

Tomorrow I mean to go about 40 versts from hence to see the mines and fabrick
which contain the richest malachites in the country. They belong to a Mr Joubchininoff
the owner of the house I have here. He is himself at present at Petersbourg
but his lady is there.I shall take also in my way the marble quarry from
which the best of the Siberian marble is taken. The Governor has order'd the General
Director of them to be at his post tomorrow that nothing may be wanting to
furnish me with all the information I may wish for. He sends his adjutant
and another officer of the department of mines with me.

In coming from Nigno-Taghil here I a wolf made his appearance in the
road and kept about the same distance out of Gunshot for a about a quarter
of an hour as if on purpose to be admired. Here as in S Florida the wolves
"wear fine skins" & seldom or never attack a man" This was the first
wild beast of any kind which I have seen since I have been in this Country
unless it be such as have been kept tame for curiosity sake.

You certainly would give one of your ears to have such an opportunity
as I at present have of informing yourself of the Jurisprudence of this
country. Some of the more recent regulations respecting criminal matters
I have beg'd the Governor to have written out for me and they shall then
be translated. As my head is full of other things of more importance
to me I do not wish to bestow a great deal of thought about on this subject
neither perhaps should I do it to your contentment. If however you will
send me immediately some Queries more especially if you write them
in French, I shall most likely have a very good if not quite so good
an opportunity of answering them. You have no occasion to menager
