My Lord

With an intention after having exchanged the sea Port of Archangel to take an excursion
I set out from Petersburg for the purpose of examining the internal & distant ports
of this Extensive Empire particularly that part of it which under the name of
Siberia has been very falsely erroneously considered as a country of misery or crushedness
inhabited by the most unhappy part of human beings

Taking a circuit to the Port of Archangel & from there Neregh Ustag & Tolihaunkaja
I passed the summer I entered Zobieda at in the neighbourhood about the beginning of March of Catherineberg in
the in these a part of the country
very remarquable for its mineral production

Independent of its gold mines which indeed are not so very important the
Iron & copper mines are the most curious and perhaps the richest
of any in the known world.

At my setting out from Petersburg I had little thoughts of penetrating
further into so a country than Zobelisk yet as I had heard much speak
of the rich mines about Barnaoul I took letters of recommendation to
that place.

But the great satisfaction I had received in observing the
progress of improvement in this contensious country every source of influence
being offered to me joined to the hospitable & flattering reception
I met with at every place would not permit to my
journey within such limits. The leaders of this country the
the with the people of that nation
The mine of Neropuisk the chances of being of the
who have been guilty of capital crimes in different parts of the
Russian are sent to there and the of the different and distant objects which
drew me so far from to so a country.

To give your Lordship some proof of my being of the little idea
I had of danger on the road I sent back an English and a
French servant which I had with me.

In some respects more sustained respond to that degree of sentiment which subsists in an arbitrary Government
in other respects left to be in a state of licentious freedom.
