He was very anxious to have my assistance in his undertakings
before I left Petersbourg: I did not however for certain reasons
choose to come to terms with him at that time, but promised to
take the part of the country where his affairs lie in my way back.
This is what I of certainly should do at the
latter end of this year had I not received these letters of yours.
Another idea of mine which I believe I did not tell you
was to ask for an Iron mine in the neighbourhood of Catherineberg
which at present belongs to the Crown. You know the length of time
I spent in the midst of mines & fabriks & how long I lived
at those belonging to Mr Daviddoff which much ressemble and are
nearly situated to these in question. The bad mechanism
and miserable economy so apparent in all these works together
with the facility of introducing a better management and some
important inventions which occurred to me during my stay
in these environs were the reasons which suggested this idea to me.
The terms on which I ment meant to ask this were that a price
being agreed upon according to a certain cal mode of calculation
I should have put into my hands under certain cautions
the capital which is at present employed in the said works,
and that I should for a certain number of years pay the
Crown a sum equivalent to the mean profit it has the
said works have of late produced. That at the expiration
of that term of years I should pay the stated purchase
money or give up the possession in a state as good as that
I took them in. Plus the crown would receive its usual
profits & I should have the surplus which my better management
might produce. It will be needless to enter into
the reasons I could have to expect the crown thus to part
with any possession, without immediate profit, there are such
benefit that without depending on any personal favour that shewn to
me it is not at all improbable my terms might be
granted. It is notorious that the profits in almo the
hands of almost any private person would exceed what the
