my observations, though she had asked Potemkin for
them 3 times: that meant she had had a wish to
talk with me, but understanding I had a great impediment
in my speech, she had given up the idea out
of tenderness to my feelings, considering the difficulty I should
be under. The Princess assured her that if I was not
eloquent I was at last intelligible, although in a foreign
language. Her majesty then promised to send for the
papers directly and to appoint me to come to her in 5
or 6 days. She ordered the accounts to be given in of the
population of one of the Districts and a chart to be made
and printed according to my plan, under the Princess's directions.
Ten days passed and she no news about my audience:
till reminding Sir James that the Empress's declining seeing me
after having herself in public expressed a desire of doing it would be injurious
to my reputation, as implying I had done something to
render myself unworthy that honour, Sir James talked
with Potemkin, and the next day was appointed for my
audience: the day after I had it. Princess Dashkoff, who
is much my friend, and Dr Rogerson her Majesty's Physician
who is a middling intriguing little tattle fellow & my
enemy, were present. He had confirmed to the Empress
the idea of the impediment in my speech: but I had
the satisfaction to know, and he had the stupidity to
confess to somebody, that the Empress told him afterwards
that she did not perceive the least of that impediment
which he had mentioned my having.
