of the matter would be more satisfactory than mine.
She is still kept from all public companies where there is a possibility of seeing me and her mother
watches her continually. Nevertheless if her attachment
to me is really so strong as she had made it appear to be,
no want of consent can stand in the way. What I have
great reason to fear is that she is very much wanting either
in sincerity or courage, and therefore I have very little hopes.
I have now, Sir, to acquaint you a circumstance which I flatter myself
will give you some degree of pleasure. Sir James who had sent me
a particular invitation to dine with him today, when dinner was over
took me aside and after shewing me a letter from Mr Fox by which it
appears absolutely impossible for any body to come out here to succede
Sir James before September, and that he the letter fixes the beginning of August
for his departure; he therefore would propose to me that I should take
upon me the business till the coming out of the next Minister whenever
that may be, in short that I should be Chargé d'affaires. As Sir
James put it on the footing of obliging him, by admitting of his going
that when otherwise he could not I should certainly have acceded to his
proposal had I not at the same time thought it a very desirable thing
for me. Such an employment must certainly afford me an opportunity
of making some friends in England although it should contrive
but for a very few months: besides it cannot but assist in my
views here. The allowance is two pounds pr day.
