Yesterday evening came a friend of mine one of Besborstky's Secretaries
to let me know that my letter had been given to the Empress on the first
opportunity which was the next morning after I had given it. That her
Majesty was well pleased with my offer and asked to have a man
of my knowledge and abilities in her service: moreover that she desired
to know at what part of the country and in what manner I chose
to be employed. I have just been to communicate this comfortable
news to Sir James, and am glad to find that he does not see that this should
be any impediment to say his proposal to me. He says that whether the
