the undertakings with private people, but all expences
and difficulties attending the bringing the inventions to
perfection would be avoided by the introducing them first
in the works under my direction. It is there we should
prepare everything to profit by elsewhere.
As to having a proportional part of the savings in
the works of the crown, that I do not expect; for I
mean to leave the conditions of my engagement
intirely to her Majesty. She seems disposed to in my
favour at present and the only way to keep her so
is to ask for nothing but leave all to her.
It is by such conduct only that I can stand out against
the opposition that will be made me, satisfy my
ambition and in the end my interest too the most
effectually. To a man whom She takes into her
service from the public character I hope to be in
at that time, no disadvantageous terms can be
offered.
Some of my friends here are displeased with
me for having accepted the being Charge d'affaires after having
offered my Services to the Empress and that she had received my
offers so favourably. They tell me her Majesty will be displeased
