Day after day have I been expecting to be fixed in this country
in her Majesty's service, and have been very unwilling to
write to you till I could let you know this for certain.
As however I have learnt today that it is impossible my
business can be settled for these ten days to come, I
must let you know how the matter stands.
When my being to be Charge d'affaires at Sir James's departure
reached the Empress's ears, she told the person who spoke of it
that he certainly be must be mistaken, that it could not
be, for that she was to have me in her service. At the
same time some persons whose judgement is of importance
gave me to understand that they feared such an intention
of mine might hurt me with respect to my engagements
in this country. As soon as Sir James understood this he
desired me nby no means to run the risk of losing the
Empress's favour by such a step; so that a letter coming
from Mr Fitzherbert about the same time mentioning his
intention of coming out here very soon, I took that
opportunity of giving up the Charge d'affaires business
and letting the people here know of my doing it and
of my readiness to enter into the service as soon as
possible. Sir James also let Mr Besberotky know
of its being to oblige him that I had had thoughts of
untertaking that business, but that he would by no means
