impede by my engagement in her Majesty's service. Mr Besborotky
told him that it depended on me to enter into the service
when I would and to be employed in what manner
and where it was most agreeable to me. The same kind
of answer he has given me when I have applied
to him about it since, putting me off however week after
week though not without some reason, for independant of
the immense quantity of business he has on his hands
there here have been forrom time to time several circumstances
which have occurred to retard my concerns. I wrote last
night the paper or kind of memorandum for him which I gave
him this morning and of which I enclose you a copy and the
answer was that I might depend upon it there would be no
disagreement about the terms that he was persuaded I should
have be well satisfied as well on the score of rank as of
appointments that he should not fail to present this paper to her
Majesty, and that there could be no doubt of the utility I
should be of to the Empire: but that he must talk the matter
over with Prince Wiasimsky the Procureur General to settle
some of the arrangements with him. Such is the flattering
language which I am treated with. He told me he hoped that
it might be settled in 10 days time and I told him accordingly
that I would wait upon him again when the 10 days are elapsed.
