I dined with Gen Landskoy as I had before when I came here,
and his civilities and attention to me seem still to increase
every mark of preference which he shewed me while I was looked
upon as a stranger. I put all to that account: but the manner
he treats me now that I am entering into the service is
really flattering. What I learn by it is that the I enjoy
the Empress's good opinion. — The Empress asked the Princess
Dashkoff again a day or two ago how my love affair went on, and
she replied, as I had desired her, that I waited only to be
in the her Majesty's service to put a determinate end to it one way
or the other, and most likely in the negative. to this I
understand were added some further expressions of approbation
of my conduct. Thus is the mountain in labour. happy
if it produce something more than the mouse.
I fear the opposition which Wiasemsky will make to
me, though I was once better friends with him than
with any. I have chosen the richest mines both of Iron
and Copper which are in the hands of the crown and indeed
the only ones of any great importance. This I fear W will
object to. I have required a degree of power which I fear he
will not like should be granted. He is in general no lover of
Innovations, and cannot but be particularly averse to such
as he will have had so little hand in the promoting and
which at the same time cannot but cause him some trouble.
