that in which other expedients are proposed instead of imprisonment
for debt, it might then be shewn to the Empress, and by that means
it seems more probable that she would get an idea of the work than
if the work were in the first instance presented to her. As you profess
it to be a Corps de Droit detaille & complet ensemble, 700 or 750
pages 8vo however closely printed appear to be very little to entertain
so much matter.

With your fundamental talents could you but acquire some of his
knowledge of the world, you would be able to turn them to the best account. I
have several projects in view which relate to you, but as they are not as
yet ripe, I shall say nothing of them. As to your great work, if it be
now in your opinion finished I cannot help wishing it might lie by
till I am settled here before it be published: for certainly we must contrive
to meet soon after that event, and I cannot help thinking but what our
meeting would affect that work in some way or other.
