Sir,
It was with no small regret that I was disappointed of the happiness
of seeing you when I did myself the honour of waiting on you the last time
I was in town; my friend Mr. Ineyd has been so obliging to give
me some conformation of what I had been otherwise informed, that
Sir James Harris had thought fit to leave my Son, at Petersburg in
the character of the King's Chargé des Affaires, upon his quitting
Russia, till the arrival of his superior, who, I understand, is
Mr Fitzherbert, read that he is to be accompanied by a Son
of yours.
It is now four years ago, since my son set out from England
upon his excursions abroad, upon which occasion, among a
great number of other letters in his favour, he was honoured
with several from you to Sir Joseph York, then at the Hague,
Sir James Harris, & others at the different places. The reception
he has met with, whereever he has been, has exceeded his
most sanguine expectations, more particularly in Russia
where he has travelled above 20,000 miles in the several
provinces of that vast Empire; the governors & commanders
of which had official orders from the Empress to give him the
best reception & to afford him every recommendation, and upon
his relation from his excursion he has had the honour of
presenting to her some papers which were receiv'd by her
Majesty with peculiar marks of attention & acknowledgement
of approbation.
His residence at Petersbourg has given him an opportunity
of becoming acquainted with most, if not all, the principal
families about court, with many of whom he has acquired
their particular intimacy & confidence, which, I doubt not,
