a great singularity here and as it is a token of poverty the
most heinous vice known here, it would be unpardonable in
me were it not in some measure accounted for by my known
situation in which I have some pretentions to pity. The girl on
her part seems now to be really very unhappy yet of all those
whom She commissions to assure me of her constancy not one
can give me hope of her taking any decisive step to get the
better of the opposition of her parents.

The disposition which
the Empress shews to encourage our making a stolen match, nor
an in short any of the many arguments which there are in
favour of it on account of her happine particular happiness
as well as mine I shall not represent to her till I am
settled here; but I shall then have very strong reasons for
concluding the business one way or other as soon as possible.
The flattering promises I have here are a tedious long time realizing,
yet I really have no right to complain when I consider the
manner in which business in general is done here. No person
about the Empress on whom my business depends is interested in
promoting it, and when that is the case Her desire to employ
me must be very strong to take effect in any reasonable time.
