Sir James dined with him yesterday and pressed him on my business
the Ber: told Sir James then that my salary was to be either 1200
or 1500 roubles. Sir James repli told him I might have 6,000
at home. This was a little stretch but will do no harm.
With respect to Salary however my determination is to accept
of any they give me. without the least but rank is the matter
of importance. I shall be no loser by an apparent disinterestedness
in point of Salary. The Courier which takes this sets
out tomorrow, you cannot therefore as yet have any
distinctive news of me. The box you sent me is come without
doubt as Mrs Hamilton is come in the Ship onboard of which it
was delivered; but I have not yet got it from the custom house.
I shall have the devil and all to pay duty. I am affraid
that even the shirts notwithstanding they are washed and
marked must pay as they were not given to the charge
of some person who might have brought them as his own.
The Custom house duties are managed with more strictness
than any other department in the Empire.

A few days ago there was a pretty large company at the grand Duke's
country seat (Panerlosky) and the conversation on the
unmarried girls of for me. The Countess of course was presently named
and our adventures came on the carpet. "I for my part" (says the
Grand Dutchess) "think the parents act mighty foolishly. A handsome
"young man and a man of such an extraordinary merit what the
"deuce would they have? Our friend Pleschijeff here knows him
well. he has taken service here, has not he, on her account?
but the Empress has been very gracious to him,
