vacant in the same house Pleschijeff: but no lodgings
are let ready furnished here; but at an amazing high rate. I have therefore
been obliged to be at the expence of furnishing them.
A carriage here
is as necessary as a coat. The one I had is so bad that it would be
flinging money away to repair it. It broke for some time past almost
every time I used it, so as for me to be obliged to hire one at the
rate of 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 roubles pr day. A new carriage then is another
unavoidable expence, & these two expences especially as there are
deductions for the first year for fees of office it is impossible my salary
should bear.

For this sum of three thousand six hundred & sixty nine roubles I have then dared to
give to Mr Shairp an assignment on you, Sir. I am alarmed at my having taken this
step. It has cost me more than you will conceive to do it, but there was no way of avoiding it.
I trust that in future, you will never have reason to disaprove of the conduct or doubt of the
sincere affection of your dutiful son Sam.l Bentham.
