where I could be free from Interruption with my Papers
about me here have been very great, but absolute
necessity, not conveniency has prescribed the
limits of my Expences. My Income at present, small
as it is, will admit of my having a comfortable
Lodging, and I have accordingly taken one which
happened to be vacant in the same house with my
friend Pleschijeff, but as Lodgings are let ready
furnished here but at an amazing high rate, I
have therefore been obliged to be at the Expence of
furnishing them. A Carriage here is as necessary
as a Coat. The one I had is so bad that it would
be flinging money away to repair it. It broke
for some time past almost every time I used it,
so as for me to be obliged to hire one at the Rate of
1 1/4 or 1 1/2 roubles pr day. A new Carriage then is
another unavoidable expence, & these two Expences
especially as there are deductions for the first year for
Fees of Office, it is impossible my Salary shou'd bear.
