Octr 6th 1783.

You may perhaps be surprized that I should not be for setting about
my planing machine as likely to be more profitable than either the
oil or iron splitting mills. Probably it might be the more profitable
of the three and as it is new and entirely of my own invention I should
prefer it; but then it would require a capital and who would choose
to employ their money on the uncertainty which there would appear to
be of its success. and a real en besides though I am confident
I could make it succede yet I can by no means be so that it
will succeed precisely in the manner I should make it at first.
perhaps it must be repeatedly attuned before it would be brought
to that perfection in which the profits would be considerable.
My present intuition is therefore to try to get that it erected first
at the expence of the crown, and to have the direction of it given
me as my duty till I have brought it to perfection: and this is
what might go on at the same time with my private concerns.

Next week I hope nothing will prevent my setting a man at work
in making a new model of the planning machine or of a Saltboiler
or possibly both together.

With respect to my engagements with
Strogonoff. First there has been a great deal of sickness in the family and
the Baron does not seem at present disposed to give himself any much trouble
about improving his estates. Secondly, I am not at present at liberty
to take so long a journey, on many accounts. 3.ly I think I can
make the experiment of the saving of fuel (which is the principal improvement)
by means of a model at a very small expence. 4.ly I wish him to shew
a greater disposition to intent himself in it, before I press him to come
to any conclusion. 5.ly I am always in hopes of finding a man
to whose integrity and tallents I can trust to do this business in my stead
more especially after I shall have made the model.
