Octr 15.

I have set hard to work this morning and with some assistance from
Pleschyeff have translated the questions which I spoke of in my
letter. They will serve to give you a better idea of what may
be published here than anything I could tell you. any you
by
and last of the

The Empress upon the Princess's showing them to her for her
approbation at first forbad their being printed but afterwards
sent for the Princess back who had already left her, sat down,
wrote the answers herself, and ordered them to be printed together

The Princess had told me of them before she showed them
to the Empress and I had been I believe a good deal instrumental
in persuading her to soften one or the expressions and leave
out one entire question which was too insolent.

It is said "the question received from an unknown hand" —
but I know the author and I believe other people know
him. He is a man of fortune but not of the best
character. You will learn by the questions the
manner of thinking & speaking of such of the nation
in general as pique themselves on their understanding

Mr Fitzherbert to whom I showed this translation of the
questions before I sealed them up, begs that you would
show them to his brother.
