from the Bark, in a short time
I was left behind, and it
was not without a great deal
of rowing that I could keep
pace with the Bark where
there was no rowing. The
fact was thus plain to be
denied, the cause of it not
so ready to be found. It was
not the depth that made this
difference for this large Bark was
very shallow being flat bottomed
at length however I explained
the matter to my satisfaction.
Rivers consist of waters running
down an Inclined Plane by the
Force of Gravity, were it not
for the resistance the water
meets with in the Bed of the River
as well at the Bottom as at the
sides, the Water would run —
down infinitely faster. Bodies
floating in this running water
are acted upon also by the force
