of itself if completely conducted nearly fill up a man's
time, and I have enough scribbling of my own to fill
up the four & twenty hours if they could all be spared
for it. Turning over just now some other
letters which stand in the same predicament
yours presents itself & gives me a severer tiring
than the rest: and so I have plucked up resolution
at last to break silence.

In answer to your kind enquiries about our situation
(I say ours for shortness) it is chequer'd like
most other peoples: and consists as yet more of hope
than anything else. The burning of Our A Smiths shop which was burnt
in the summer put us to some expence and threw
is that business a good deal back as you may imagine. This
very day we have the pleasure of hearing that the
Glass-house at Ashaken has shared the same fate.
This is the end I suppose of the Glass-house business
which from delays and difficulties respecting clay for
the furnaces, and other inconveniencies has hitherto rather
been a burthen than a gain. The tannery has likewise
undergone sad delays from similar causes:
which could but it is now we flatter ourselves within
a month or two of being compleated, and in the mean
time we have got between 2 & 3000 hides in of
one sort or other, some of which are coming out every
day. Mean time we have great orders at great
prices: and when completely stocked we have reason
to expect that it may produce 10.000, 15,000 or
even 20,000 Roubles a year. My Brother has hit
upon a very singular new & I think important
though simple idea in Architecture which is the subject of a course
of letters I have just finished for my Father & which
I think it is not improbable may find their way to the press.
