This situation will enable me to live comfortably enough but it is
very uncertain if it will afford me any opportunity of making a
fortune. The only two ways in which I foresee it would assist
those pursuits are by furnishing means of proving the success of such inventions
as may become profitable either in other parts of the country or in
England or other countries even, and by enabling me to protect such
people as I may take to my assistance and who may pursue turn the improvements
to private account sharing the profits with me.
At any rate I shall however accept of his proposals and employ myself
in some way under his orders though it were for a short time only; and
I believe I shall give him the plan of a new class of Ships for the
black sea in which also shall introduce several expedients of
Economy in their construction.
As to my present employment about
the Fontanka Canal I have not thought of it except for two or
3 days at first since I have been appointed to it. In that time
I thought of 2 or 3 inventions to facilitate the work, one of them
an engine for driving of piles I made the model of it which
when I and showed it to Prince Wiasimsky the Procureur General
who has taken upon him to be the director in chief of those
works. He ordered a Commission or Board who have the
management of the works under him to examine into the merits of
my invention. His Not having, or rather not choosing, to appear to have,
confidence enough in my judgment for an affair of less than 100
rubles to have the machine erected; but to refer referring it to a set
of people ignorant to the highest degree and interested against
to oppose m any improvements, more than the Navy board in
England, convinced me of what I had indeed no doubt of before, that
