6.
he was far from being my friend, and therefore shewed my
model to Landskoy who took it to the Empress immediately.
She means to have it erected, but if Wiasemsky can, he will prevent
it, and I shall not stir myself in the matter till as soon as
I have power I shall have it done under my own directions.
This Commission have never had it yet to examine; nor do
I believe that I shall ever let them: indeed there is not yet
accumulation of wisdom enough amongst them to enable them to
pass a judgement on it, for Wiasemsky's orders were to wait
till one of the Members of the commission who is on an expedition
at Riga returns before they pass their judgement.
In the mean time I never trouble them nor they me. I never
received but one d order which I send you a copy of for your amusement.
You will see by the stile of it that the man seemed in doubt
whether he dared give me an order or not, though Wiasemsky
placed me under his command. He is a Brigadier in rank.
The only notice I ever took of his order was to tell him that if
he would give me a corporal or Sarjeant I would transmit his
the order to him, as the business seemed to be a proper employment
for one of that class. This commander of mine and the Commission
in general are very well disposed that I should not meddle in
the business at all; because if I did I must either lessen
their share in the fees from the contractors, or there might
be a danger of their my exposing them. We seem therefore to be
very well agreed that I should not do a single anything more
than go to receive my salary every four months when it is due.
I went to my Commander a fortnight ago and play'd at billiards
with him a couple of hours, which was a more meritorious action in his eyes than the finding an expedient for the saving the nation half a million of roubles
