half a million of rubles. As to Wiasemsky I cannot prevail upon
myself to go to see him of hollidays as is the custom, nor to eat
his dinners: so that I have not seen him this month.

I have now got pretty well over my disappointment and I am
in very good health; so that I hope to apply closely to business as
soon as Potemkin has taken me under his orders, in the mean
time I am very unsettled as it is so uncertain what employment
I shall have: besides I have so lost the habit of application that
I know not when I shall recover it, what will make this the more
difficult is that I am so much behind in every thing that I wish to
do. I have collected a great many papers affording information about
this country and have several sources open to me which it would be
highly desirable that I should profit by, but I have not courage to set
about it. Pleschijeff has the absolute management & care of all the
Grand Duke's papers, and he has confidence enough in me to furnish
me with almost anything I wish from them. Princess Dashkoff is full of
interesting anecdotes which such as you or I can not hear without being anxious
to make them our own: besides I have other means of acquiring
what can be known but to very few. But all this you may say
perhaps that I may as well aside, be it so, but consider then my
inventive disposition and the imperfect state of every department
here and you will have no doubt but I must have a multitude
of proposals for improvement which have arisen from what I have
seen in this country, over and above those which are have ever
together and which are applicable to most countries. I have the
means now of introducing any such proposals to the Empress and it is
