strange if some of them dont please her enough for to assure me
her favourable disposition at least, and this is the case which I would
make if such as easily became lucrative; but with respect to
the latter may such as may be lucrative I must find some person or persons to whom
I can trust the management of them to so as to secure myself a
share of the profits. When I have found such persons I could
procure them such protection and terms as I could never have
had in my own name. Besides I have a great deal of experience
to prove how much better I can instruct others than execute myself.
I have had the satisfaction of having been of use as well in the
way of protection as of instruction & advice to several people since
I have been here, and it must be flattering to me to that
I have 5 or 6 friends to each of whom I am counsellor in chief; but
then I have everything I dread the mortification to see how unfit
I am for the immediate execution of anything in which my own interest
alone is in view. My difficulty in writing, in drawing up any paper,
and more particularly in finishing it to my mind, has I fear rather
increased upon me, and this partly from want of habit and partly
because the number of objects of attention being increased each separate
one becomes of less importance. It will be to no purpose to fill sheets of paper
in discerning the causes of this inability of mine; the effect of it I fear
will be that unless you do pay me a visit and bring with you unless
I can get some such man or men as Anderson whose Character would
allow me to place the confidence necessary to derive assistance from his abilities
I may live here with ease and repute, but shall never make a
fortune. I can enjoy a great share of esteem and perhaps respect
here, but shall have nothing to procure it me whenever I return home.
