the same time that it exasperates the Parents in the highest
degree against Ples. to whom they seem to be more violent
than against me, affords them, as they imagine, an —
opportunity of revenging themselves on him. for tho' they
knew that what Ples. said was nothing more than true,
yet they with reason conclude that the Empress would
be highly displeased, and think herself obliged to shew
her displeasure at Ples.f's making use of her Name
The Aunt, after thanking her Majesty for some favours
lately conferred on her, means by way of introducing
the Subject to beg her Majesty not to counterballance
all her kindness by encouraging an unsuitable Match
with her Niece; The Empress will then of course promise
not to do it, or perhaps appear surprised that She should
be suspected of it; and the Aunt will then say that
Ples. told her Niece that she would. Thus the Plan
is laid to ruin Ples. and should it be pursued
I fear the effect would be very disagreable to him.
My mind is made up to every other Consequence of this
Rupture, and indeed I fear no other, as my Conduct
has been approved of to the last; and as I have every
consolation for the disappointment. I have not one
Friend but who is rather disposed to wish me Joy than
to condole with me, as they asure me that independent
of the doubt that my disposition would suit her's
the Connection with her family must have given
me constant uneasiness.

One Consequence however is that my Plans in this
Neighbourhood must be abandoned, at least for the
present: I must certainly quit Petersburg till the
affair is blown over out of delicacy to her. So that
it is lucky that an offer of Prince Potemkin's affords
me a good opportunity. He wishes me to go to Cherson
