with me; at any rate I shall accept of his Proposal tho' it were for
a Short time only, and I believe I shall give him the Plan of a
new Class of Ships for the Black Sea, in which also I shall
introduce several Expedients of Oeconomy in their Construction

I have now got pretty well over my disappointment, and I am
in very good health, so that I hope to apply closely to Business
as soon as Potemkin has taken me under his Orders, in
the meantime I am very unsettled as it is very uncertain
what Employment I shall have.

I have collected a great many 'Papers affording Information'
about this Country, and have several Sources open to me
which it would be highly desirable I should profit by
Pleshijeff has the absolute management and Care of all the
Grand Dukes Papers, and he has confidence enough in me
to furnish me with almost any thing I wish to have
from them. Princess Dashkoff is full of interesting
Anecdotes such as you, nor I, cannot hear without
being anxious to make them our own — besides I have
other means of acquiring what can be known but to
very few, but all this you may say, I may as well
lay aside, be it so, but consider then my Inventive
Disposition, and the imperfect State of every Department
here, and you will have no doubt but I must have
a multitude of Proposals for Improvements which have
arisen from what I have seen in this Country over &
above those which are applicable to most Countries. I have
the means now of introducing any such Proposals to the
Empress, and it is strange if some of them don't please her
enough to assure me of her favourable disposition at least
and this is the ace which I would make of such as cannot
easily become lucrative, but with respect to such as
may be lucrative, I must find some Person or Persons to
whom I can trust the management of them so as to secure
myself a Share of the Profit. When I have found such Persons,
I could procure them such "Protection" & Terms as I could never
have had in my own name. I have had the satisfaction of
