be flattering to me to perceive that I have five or Six Friends
to Each of whom I am Councellor in Chief.

Whether I shall reside at Cherson or whether I shall have
to Shift about when ever there may be anything going
forward in Potemkins Governments when he may
see or I may see that I can be of use I cannot tell
as yet. He will certainly get me to his Estate on
the Borders of Poland to give directions for the Erecting
of some Machines there tho' he has not yet told me so
I have just this instant learn'd that it is probable I shall
have the Directing of the building some Corn Mills in the
Crimea as one of my first Commissions. They must,
some of them at least, be work'd by wind or possibly by oxen
as their Fodder will be very cheap; you know certainly
how fine a Country that is; but Cherson itself is —
unhealthy in the Autumn. The Plague was there last year
but is now ceased, and even when it was there I shod
not have feared it. It is only among the Common People
for want of Care and sometimes to others from Intemperance
that it is fatal. At Constantinople this last year it raged
with more fury than for many years which contributed
not a little to induce the Turks to admit the Pretensions
of this Court and thereby establish the Peace.

The Crimea now becomes another new Government
added to this Empire, and Potemkin will of Coarse be the
General Governor or Vice Roy. He has at present the
two adjacent Governments of New Russia and Azopk.
He is very great and powerful now from having obtained
so many advantages from the Turks. It was all his doing.

published in the Russian language but he did not care to give
me one, and insisted on my not thinking of sending one till the
