Petersburg Jan.y 22d O.S. 1784
A thousand thanks to you for your Letter of the 9th of
Dec.r; since that time Fortune has been somewhat busy
with me. I know not whether you will reckon
among her favours or her frowns a certain renounce
which I received about three weeks ago.
Before the moment of this renounce I had every
thing to hope. There had been much greater firmness
than you would have expected, and all threats
were unavailing. General Lanskoy took it into his head
without any application of mine to intercede
in my favour, promising Showers of favour
from the Powers above, but this only exasperated
and confirmed obstinacy, so that after sickness
and the opinions alarms of Physicians were in vain,
nothing remained but Elopement, that was —
consented to, and preparing for, when at length
a general attack, in which the Sufferings real and
apparent of the Mother had the greatest weight,
overpowered her and she gave it up; a Misunderstanding
which ensued about the not giving up her Letters
in the manner required seems to have displeased
even to have rooted out all sentiments of affection,
and to have established in their room a degree of
animosity or rather rage against me, and still
