I should be loth to leave this country at present or rather
I should be unwilling to return home although something
advantageous were to offer, on account of my not yet
having done anything worth speaking of here: but at the
same time if anything can be done for me which though
it did not afford me an opportunity of distinguishing
myself like that of Commissioner of the Navy, should
enable me to live decently in England and that
could facilitate your pursuits I would give up every
thing the most flattering here to embrace it.
Something like Commissioner of the Victualling of which
employment I certainly should not be fond, would by the
Salary enable us to live together comfortably and to
cultivate the acquaintance which from our joint
connections and occupations we might would procure us
so as to lay the foundation for greater things.
We must distinguish ourselves some how or other and you
must that without you sacrificing your independence.
Till something of this can be done you must come
to me.
I think you said that Ld Shelburne had
a bear lending scheme for me: but I don't think any
such scheme could answer the purpose as it would separate
us for nothing. Perhaps Ld Howe might be disposed
to send me to visit the Marine of other countries if so and
