S.B. to Miss Harris sister to Sir J. Harris

Petersburg Jan.y 22d O.S. 1784

A thousand thanks to you for your Letter of the 8th of
Dec.r; since that time Fortune has been somewhat busy
with me. I know not whether you will reckon among
her favours or her frowns a certain renounce which
I received about 3 weeks ago.

Before the moment of this renounce I had
everything to hope. There had been much greater firmness
than you would have expected, and all threats were
unavailing. Lanskoy (The Empresses's favourite) S.B.) took it into his head without any
application of mine to intercede in my favour, promising
showers of favour from the powers above: but
this only exasperated and confirmed obstinacy, so
that after sickness and the opinions alarms of Physicians
were in vain, nothing remained but elopement, that
was consented to and preparing for, when at length a
